Keep your focus

Welcome!
Already we’re entering the final quarter of 2005 and a change-over of leadership teams to take us in to 2006. It is also a time, traditionally, when your businesses and BNI referrals are at their busiest.
Traditionally, it's also when some members drop off after the Christmas break.
Your Assistant Directors will be asking the new leadership teams for their goals for the incoming year – a good idea is to set goals that not only take into account the natural attrition your chapter may experience, but to set goals which will keep up the momentum of your chapter.

There are a couple of articles and examples in your newsletter to keep the entire chapter focused on generating continuous, powerful word-of-mouth business for each other.
On another note, we would like to welcome Fiona Harrop to the BNI head office team.
In the last 14 months BNI business has grown by 30 per cent and the decision was made to move towards having a full time person in our office.
Fiona has a background in office management, which combined with the increased hours, should mean that BNI is well placed to continue to manage with the anticipated growth.
Wishing you a year of Givers Gain!
Regards
Graham Southwell
BNI National Director New Zealand

Inspirational stories characterised leadership team dinner

The recent round of leadership dinners throughout New Zealand attracted record numbers of outgoing leadership teams – people met together for an inspirational evening with good food, drink and networking.
The opportunity to network was not lost on many and we know some business was done around the tables.

Auckland
In Auckland more than 130 leadership team members were treated to key note presentations from small business specialist, Sarah Trotman, and motivational speaker Jason Barrell.
BNI member Katrina Denize said Jason’s story inspired her because he was a person who despite suffering major setbacks throughout his life – dyslexia, a broken neck, a brain tumour – continues to display a great attitude and appetite for life.
“Business owner, super 12 rugby player and policeman are just some of his successes.”
Jason’s maxim is: “The only disability is attitude.”
Rachel Thompson from Hospice New Zealand also took five minutes to tell members how their donations – made earlier this year – helped make a positive difference.
BNI would like to acknowledge Auckland Leadership Team Dinner sponsors:
* Shelley Thomas and Selwyn Hodder - ANZ National Bank. The ANZ Bank sponsorship included a special gift for members at the dinner - a business planning CD-Rom as a practical tool for small and medium business planning.
The ANZ's sponsorship of the leadership dinner is part of the bank's iniative to support small and medium sized businesses in New Zealand.
* Katrina Denize, Synergy Financial Solutions Ltd - Katrina is a long time member of BNI and a regular supporter of BNI events.
BNI would also like to acknowledge the contributions of:
* Birgit Utech, Birgit Photography Ltd, for the photos.
* Floral Design by Margarita Kop (florist), for the flowers.
Christchurch
In Christchurch the Leadership Team Dinner was held at Cousinns Restaurant at the end of August and was attended by 29 people.
Regional Director Alastair Christie says it was a noisy affair – typical of BNI networkers –and everyone had a good time.
“The venue was well received; it’s a little suburban restaurant that not many had been to before which made it more interesting.”
Wellington
The Wellington region Leadership Team Dinner is being held on September 29 at the Juniper Restaurant and Bar in Johnston Street.
Levin
The Levin Leadership Team Dinner was held at Lily's Ranch House on September 14.

Your chapter’s success depends on YOU

Leadership Team Training – Important Reminder...
Attending the Leadership Team Training events in October is essential for everybody serving on the leadership team – even if you have previously served on the leadership team.
Like other successful international companies, Business Network International is founded on a system for structured referral networking.
* Work the system properly, such as following the agenda, and you will succeed.
* Developed and refined over time, the BNI system is constantly updated and it’s important that you keep up-to-date with new developments.
* If you are not familiar with the components of the BNI system you will end up introducing your own modifications and moving away from the formula, thereby increasing the risk of creating all kinds of problems with the dynamics of your chapter.
By agreeing to serve on your chapter’s leadership team you are taking on the responsibility for the wellbeing and prosperity of your chapter – your chapter’s success will stand or fall according to your contribution.

Guidelines for a good memory hook
Isn’t it funny how fragments of phrases, jokes, songs and rhymes remind us of people, places and events?
“Ehhh – what’s up Doc?” – remember that one?
In his book, Seven Second Marketing, Dr Ivan Misner, says the key word in memory hook is MEMORY, and the best way to make it MEMORABLE is to make it vivid and short.
* Let your memory hook appeal to the basic senses – sight, smell, touch, hearing…
For example: “How Kiwis SEE the world” - is a good local one from House of Travel.
* Make people laugh. HUMOUR breaks down barriers and makes your memory hook memorable. Inject humour into your memory hook, like this one from a woman solicitor:
- “I can’t wait to get my hands on your briefs”.
- “Be true to your teeth or they will be false to you”, from a dentist.
* Try verse. Most people can recite from memory snippets of poetry or verse.
Here’s a memory hook that uses verse from an optometrist:
“When things go blurry, don’t stop to ‘ponda’, stumble to 17th street and see Dr. Honda.”
Of course, the best memory hook is one that can be used in many contexts…
At a BNI meeting, on your business cards, on your letterhead, your calendars, your giveaway pens and even your print ads.
Finally…
“Ask and you shall receive” or as Australia’s National Director, Geoff Kirkwood said at the Big Breakfast: “Careful what you ask for, you might just get it.”

Viaduct chapter goes walkabout

Members of the Viaduct Chapter of BNI put on their walking shoes early in September and tackled the Te Henga cliff-top walk from Bethells Beach (Te Henga) to south of Muriway Beach.
Organiser John Schumacher said the walk offered stunning views of Auckland's wild west coast and chapter members stopped at Swanson station cafe for lunch on the way back.

Counties chapter relaunches

BNI welcomed several new chapters recently, including High Flyers, Northland, Nelson 69ers and Hutt Business Catalysts.
